The Smart City Smart Environment series highlight sustainability topics that are of importance in Hong Kong. After having covered water resilient cities, waste reduction and single-use plastic waste, this lunchtime seminar will focus on green mobility.


The seminar

The afternoon will start with opening remarks by Mr CW Tse, the Under Secretary of Environment, summarising the latest Hong Kong Environmental policies and developments while focusing on the transportation industry and road side pollution.


This is followed by a panel discussion on alternative fuels for transportation. Developments in alternative fuels like biodiesel, hydrogen and electricity will be reviewed as sustainable solutions while progress in Connected Autonomous Vehicles might be touched upon. The panelists at this seminar are Dr Jonathan Beard (Head Transportation & Logistics at Arcadis Asia), Alexander Mastrovito (Head of Sustainable Transport Solutions at Scania Asia & Oceania), Thomas Wu (CEO at ASB Biodiesel) and Paul Bromley (Managing Director at Phoenix Business Consulting).


The panel will be moderated by Michiel Mak, CEO of EMCS and member of Sustainability Initiative of the Dutch Chamber.

    Michiel is a Senior Energy Executive with over 30 years of experience in the Oil and Gas, Energy Trading, Downstream, Power, LNG and Clean Energy industries.
    He is currently CEO of EMCS Limited, based in Hong Kong. EMCS is a strategic advice company, mainly focused on energy companies from the USA and Europe and Utilities from China seeking strategic consultancy services in the area of energy matters, gas and LNG in China and the AP region. He is also an Operating Partner with Prostar Capital.
    Michiel started his career with Shell in The Netherlands. He held various Senior roles in the USA, Europe, Africa, the Far East and China during the 27 years he worked for Shell.
    Michiel is born in Ethiopia, French educated, graduated in Finance at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and is a Dutch citizen.

    Wu Xubin (Thomas Wu) has over 15 years experience in the international trade and energy industry and acts as CEO of ASB Biodiesel Hong Kong since Dec 2017. Before ASB, Mr Wu started ithe biofuel business 3 years ago in CERCG (China Energy Reserve and Chemicals Group Ltd) in Shenzhen and developed the feedstock (Used cooking oil) exporting business in 2016 and be the biggest exporter (more than 15000mt monthly in 2017) in China. Mr. Wu also managed the European standard biodiesel (EN14214) exporting business by bulk since May 2016 in China. On base the petrol chemical business with Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC etc, Mr Wu pushes and develops the biofuel business.

    Jonathan is the Asia Head of Business Advisory; and Transportation and Logistics Advisory at Arcadis, the world’s leading provider of design and consultancy for natural and built assets. The company employs more than 28,000 staff worldwide and has advised on many of the world’s leading transportation developments, including the UK’s Crossrail 2 and M4 Corridor project, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), Singapore-KL High Speed Rail, Incheon Airport and a number of assignments for Hong Kong’s MTR. A key philosophy of Arcadis’ urban transportation work is Mobility Oriented Development (MODe) – this thinking is also reflected in the company’s annual Sustainable Cities Index.
    Jonathan has been resident in Hong Kong for over 18 years and has led advisory studies on regulation of the MTR and franchised buses, assessments of the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge, cross-border ferries, high speed rail, Maglev, Hong Kong Port and airport development, and innovative mobility solutions such as Hyperloop. He is currently working on the development of Malaysia’s smart cities’ strategy and the strategic planning of various transport and logistics assets across Asia.

    Head of Sustainable Transport Solutions at Scania Asia & Oceania

    Alexander Mastrovito is the project leader for Scania’s deployment of autonomous trucks in Singapore and the architect of Scania’s Hong Kong Fleet Management Centre. The Centre is dedicated to promoting efficient and sustainable heavy duty road transport of goods and people. Alexander is also responsible for promoting sustainable transport solutions including working on bio-fuel projects ranging from ethanol and bio-diesel to biogas produced from local waste. He is also heading up Scania’s regional work in Asia paving the way for electromobility, autonomous vehicles, ITS and mobility as a service.
    Prior to joining Scania he was based in Beijing and has now spent 11 years in the Greater China region working in the automotive industry. Alexander currently holds positions within several environmental policy making bodies in Hong Kong.
    He holds a Master’s Degree from Uppsala University, Sweden.

    A Chartered Engineer who graduated from Loughborough University in the UK with a degree in Automotive Engineering & Design and has now been based in Hong Kong for 13 years. He has previously worked with Bedford, Goodyear, Plaxtons, Leyland Trucks, Green Dynamic Electric Vehicles as well as Alexander Dennis and it’s predecessor companies.
    With 30 years’ industry experience, including a variety of senior roles, Paul has championed and overseen the successful launch of many ground-breaking products such as the Dennis Dart, Rapier Fire Truck, Trident 2-axle and 3-axle double deck & Enviro500 buses.
    Having worked on diesel emissions reductions programmes and CNG projects previously as well as leading the introduction of hybrid buses into Hong Kong Paul has spent the past 3 years working on the wider introduction of e-vehicles across global markets working with manufacturers of minivans, minibuses, buses and heavy duty vehicles manufactured both in China and Europe.
